Alex Solunac, BFRO Investigator, Victoria BC Canada

Presentation – Sasquatch research in Canada

A lifelong resident of Vancouver Island, Alex’s interest in sasquatch started in his youth after seeing the Patterson-

Gimlin footage on television in the early 1970’s. Alex’s research includes review of historical evidence and field work on Vancouver Island. Alex is grateful for the friendship and mentoring from three researchers: John Green, Dr. John Bindernagel, and Chris Murphy.

Alex has been a member of the BFRO since 2009 and has been active in hosting expeditions on Vancouver Island along with colleagues David Hill and Steven Gray. These expeditions focus on citizen science with the goal to engage people with a science background and an interest in the Sasquatch.

The Vancouver Island Sasquatch Society was founded in 2018 by David, Stephen, and Alex. It was developed from the need for a Vancouver Island citizen science-based organization to actively engage in field work and study for producing evidence of a potentially uncatalogued species, the Sasquatch. The Society’s goal is to further the process of discovery of this controversial subject and

to engage in various forms of evidence collection and study with scientific controls in place.

Currently Sasquatch research is in the discovery process. Vancouver Island Sasquatch Society members support the criteria of testability, consistency, predictive power, and simplicity in their field work and research. Their aim is to show that the various forms of evidence of the Sasquatch can be viewed in the context of a prolonged discovery process, providing criteria to the scientific

community to challenge their prevailing skepticism by applying tested field research to expand the standing knowledge of the Sasquatch.

This is accomplished with:

—Active Field Research on Vancouver Island.

—Interviewing witnesses, document, and following through with site investigations.

—Placing of trail cameras, EDNA sample collecting, casting of tracks.

—Attending conferences and presenting data from their research.

—Historical research gathering from news media of reports.

—Leading Expeditions into their research areas, providing education, fieldwork, and

technology to people with a science background and interest in the study of relic hominoids.

For years, three Greater Victoria men have been locked in the ultimate game of hide-and-seek with its most celebrated player and current reigning champion: Sasquatch.

Armed with trail cameras, night-vision gear and plenty of tenacity, Saanich residents Alex Solunac and Dave Hill, along with View Royal’s Stephen Gray, have spent countless hours combing Vancouver Island’s backcountry for the elusive creature many dismiss as little more than campfire lore.

But they’re not chasing the bipedal hairy giant for bragging rights. Nor are they seeking social media clicks with blurry snapshots or videos of the mythical beast peeking from its hiding place within the trees and shrubbery.
